Slow, bloody death for woman
Forensic evidence shows victim struggled to ward off 'brutal' attacks in her flat

NOT A single wound was enough, by itself, to kill her.
But there were 110 of them - almost 50 around her head and neck alone - and together, they allowed life to drain out of 69-year-old Tham Weng Kuen. She died of "relatively slow, venous bleeding", a forensic expert told the court yesterday.
Dr Lai Siang Hui from the Health Sciences Authority had performed an autopsy on the murder victim.
Yesterday in court, through the pattern on Madam Tham's many wounds, he gave an indication of her desperate last moments.
The two suspects, Ismil Kadar, 37, and his brother Muhammad, 30, listened intently and went through the forensic photographs without any emotions.
Ismil is accused of killing Mdm Tham while Muhammad ransacked her Boon Lay Avenue flat on May 6 last year.
While she was being attacked, her bedridden husband lay helplessly in the bedroom.
Mdm Tham was a small woman, barely 1.43m tall and weighing just 43kg, but it was obvious from the injuries on her arms that she had put up a fierce resistance before succumbing to her wounds.
And even while she was bleeding to death, she did her best to crawl away from her assailant, who hacked away at her body.
She was found dead, semi-prone, next to the refrigerator in her kitchen. "She had agonisingly rolled along the floor, flipping from one side to the other," Dr Lai told Justice Woo Bih Li.
There was blood on the walls of her three-room flat and the furniture, including the television cabinet. A broken knife blade was found on the toilet floor and a chopper on the kitchen shelf.
Said Dr Lai: "There were no life-threatening wounds. The stains were all below waist level. This meant that the deceased was attacked when she was in a sitting position, crawling or lying down."
He said that the different directions of the wounds and the fact that they overlap indicated a "prolonged yet frantic assault on the victim, who was all the while, making great effort to move away from her assailant".
The findings were "consistent with the assault having been inflicted by one assailant".
Dr Lai told the court: "The bruises on the front of the neck suggest that the assailant had gripped the deceased with an armlock around the neck."
Reconstructing the final moments leading to Mdm Tham's death, Dr Lai believed that the housewife was first slashed in the toilet with the knife. She then stumbled to a white plastic chair in the kitchen and slumped onto it, placing her bloodied head against the wall.
The attacker had possibly "left her alone" for a while before returning to continue his assault, said Dr Lai.
He added that Mdm Tham could then have tried to escape to the living room while the killer, who had dropped the knife in the toilet, picked a cleaver from the kitchen. He then ruthlessly hacked the elderly woman as she tried in vain to evade his attacks.
The police believed that Mdm Tham was killed between 8am and 2pm. Nonetheless Dr Lai said she was likely to be killed between 11am and 7pm.
Said Dr Lai, who examined the body at the crime scene at about 3.15am the next day: "The deceased succumbed to the assault at the entrance of the kitchen. There wasn't much blood left in her body.
